An S fold curtain hook is the one hook type that cannot be a pin hook, because a wave heading has no gathers to pin into. The heading is a flat tape or a sewn pocket running straight along the top of the panel, and the folds come from the tape and the carrier spacing rather than from bunched fabric.

So the hook clamps instead. The body grips the heading at a fixed point, the top of the hook engages the carrier, and a serrated stem between the two sets how far the panel hangs below the carrier — which is the only dimension the workroom cannot decide in advance.

R&C supplies these S fold curtain hooks in white, in bulk, for wave and ripple fold tracks. The naming splits by market — Australian and New Zealand buyers ask for S fold, UK buyers for wave curtain hooks, and North American buyers for ripple fold.

On a pleat tape, the heading is gathered by cords and the hook goes through a pocket: the fabric can move, so a hook placed slightly off still works. A wave heading is the opposite. The tape is flat, the fold pitch is fixed by the way the tape was sewn, and every carrier sits at an even spacing along the track.

That means the hook has two jobs at once, and pin hooks only do one of them. It has to hold the panel at the correct point along the tape so the folds stay in register with the carriers, and it has to hold the drop at the point the fitter set. A pin hook through a flat tape does neither — it grips nothing, and it slides.

On S fold curtain hooks the body carries two arms that close over the heading and hold it across its width rather than at a single point. That spread matters on a wave heading: a single-point fixing lets the tape rotate slightly, and a tape that rotates throws the fold out of line by the time it reaches the floor.

Holding it across the width keeps the panel square to the track, which is what keeps a wave looking like a wave instead of a series of leaning folds.

The serrated stem on these S fold curtain hooks is the adjustment. The stem slides through the body and the teeth hold it where it is set, so the panel can be hung higher or lower against the same carrier without touching the heading.

In a wave curtain that is the correction that actually gets used. The fold pitch is locked in once the tape is sewn and pressed, and re-doing it means unpicking a heading that has already been set — expensive, and rarely as good the second time. The drop, on the other hand, has to be right against a real floor in a real room, and it is the one thing that can still be changed at the window.

The order that works: hang the first panel at the estimated setting, look at the bottom edge against the floor, then move the stem one tooth at a time until it is right. Fix that setting and copy it to every other hook in the run, then correct only the panels that are visibly out. Adjusting each hook independently from the start gives a heading that is right hook by hook and wavy along the bottom.

A wave curtain only reads as one when the folds are identical. The pitch is set by the tape, but the hook position decides whether the panel arrives at the carrier where it should.

Practical rule with S fold curtain hooks: set the first hook, then measure from that hook to the same point on the next one along the tape, and repeat. Working from the tape rather than from the carrier keeps the error from accumulating down a long run — a small error repeated across a wide window is what turns an even wave into a drift.

On a long span it is also worth hanging from the centre outward rather than from one end, so any residual error splits to both ends instead of arriving all at one side.

These are for wave and ripple fold headings on a carrier track — the S-fold wave curtain track range, where the carriers are evenly spaced and the heading is a flat tape or a sewn wave pocket.

They are not for pleat tape headings: pencil, triple and pinch pleat all need a prong through a pocket, which is what the metal curtain pin hooks and the plastic curtain hooks are for. Sending wave hooks against a pleat-tape order is a mismatch that shows up immediately at installation, because there is nothing for the clamp to grip.

Wave headings are usually specified in sheers, unlined fabrics and mid-weight drapes, and on those S fold curtain hooks carry the load without trouble. The arms spread the grip across the tape, which also takes the point load off any single stitch line.

Where it stops being fine is heavy interlined work: a sustained load makes a moulded part creep, and a hook that has moved has also changed the drop it was set to. For that specification, say so at the order stage rather than at the first callback.

S fold curtain hooks are supplied white, loose in bulk, counted by weight, with bagging to the count the order asks for. Wave work tends to be quoted by the window rather than by the metre, so a workroom usually wants a box it can draw from across several jobs rather than a bag per order.

If the hooks go into a printed retail bag, say so when ordering — the count per bag is fixed before the goods leave.

No. A pleat tape heading is gathered by cords and needs a prong through the pocket; there is nothing on a gathered heading for these arms to grip. Use a pin hook for pleat tape and these for wave and ripple fold headings.

Yes, and that is the reason S fold curtain hooks exist. The serrated stem slides through the body so the panel can be raised or lowered against the same carrier, without unpicking the heading — which on a wave curtain is the expensive part to redo.

They suit carrier tracks with an even carrier spacing and a flat tape or sewn wave heading. Carrier and heading dimensions vary between systems, so send the track and tape specification with the order and the fit is checked before packing rather than after.

Not on the same heading — one is for pleat tape and one is for wave. They are often used in the same project, on different windows, where one room has a wave heading and another has a gathered one. Just keep the two lines separate on the order so neither is picked for the wrong heading.

White is the standard finish, which covers whites, off-whites and the pale sheers that wave headings are usually made in. If a project calls for a colour to match a dark or coloured drape, raise it before the order.

These S fold curtain hooks belong with the S-fold wave curtain track and the runners in the curtain runners category, which is where most wave orders start. They are filed under curtain rod and track accessories. For gathered headings the metal curtain pin hooks and the plastic curtain hooks cover pleat tape, and where the drop has to be corrected on a gathered heading the adjustable curtain hooks do that job. The rest of the rail range is in curtain tracks and rails.

A white plastic hook that clamps a flat wave heading and holds it square to the carriers, with a serrated stem to set the drop at the window.
