Curtain Track Drive Unit – Belt Housing with Square Socket

The end housing of a motorized curtain track — the belt turns around inside it, the motor couples through a square socket, and a screw block sets the belt tension.

Inquire

A curtain track drive unit is the housing at the end of a motorized rail where the belt turns around and where the motor couples on. It closes the track, carries the idler that the belt loops over, and takes the square output shaft of the motor through a socket in its base plate.

R&C supplies this curtain track drive unit as a white housing with an aluminium base plate, a square shaft socket and an adjustable tensioning block. It is a component for track builders assembling their own motorized systems, and a replacement part for installers repairing a track where the housing has cracked or the socket has worn.

What the drive unit does in the track

The belt cannot simply end at the track. It has to turn around and come back, and a curtain track drive unit is what makes that happen — the housing closes the open end of the extrusion, holds the return pulley the belt runs over, and gives the two belt ends a place to pass each other without touching.

That is why a curtain track drive unit is not a decorative end cap. A plain end cap stops the track looking unfinished; a drive unit is a mechanical part under load every time the curtain moves. The difference shows up in the wall thickness of the housing and in the fact that the belt is under tension where it turns.

Because everything happens inside the housing, a worn idler or a cracked socket is not visible from the room. It shows up as noise at the end of the travel, or as a belt that will not hold tension no matter how often it is adjusted.

The square socket — how the motor couples

The socket in the base plate is the interface to the motor. The motor’s output shaft is square, the socket is square, and the fit between them is what transmits the drive without a grub screw working loose.

That square is the reason a curtain track drive unit is not interchangeable with any other. Shaft size differs between motor families, and the socket has to match the motor it is being paired with rather than the track it is being fitted to. When ordering a replacement, the motor model matters more than the rail length.

The base plate is screwed to the housing rather than moulded into it, which is what allows the plate — and with it the socket — to be replaced on its own. On a track that is otherwise sound, that is the difference between changing a plate and changing the whole housing.

Belt tension and the tensioning block

The tensioning block sits in the housing and is adjusted by a screw. It pushes against the belt run and sets how tight the loop is. Too slack and the belt skips a tooth under load; too tight and the idler and the motor bearing take a load they were not designed for.

The setting that works is the one where the belt runs without a visible sag on the return side and without a hum at the motor end. Adjust in small steps and run the curtain the full length between adjustments — a belt that feels right at one end of the track can bind at the other if the rail and the belt are not parallel.

The tensioning block is also the part that gets over-tightened by whoever fits it last. If a track comes back with a noisy motor rather than a slack belt, that is usually why.

Matching the housing to the track profile

A curtain track drive unit has to close the extrusion it is fitted to, so the profile matters as much as the socket. The width across the top of the rail, the height, and the width of the slot at the bottom all have to line up — a housing that is close but not exact will fit, seal badly, and let the belt run off the idler.

Send the track profile or the track model with the enquiry rather than a measurement taken with a tape. The three dimensions that matter are the ones that are hardest to measure by hand: the top width, the overall height and the slot width underneath.

This housing is built for the motorized aluminium tracks in the curtain tracks and rails range, and matches the extrusion used on the extendable motorized curtain track and the electric curtain track with LED light.

Replacing a drive unit without replacing the track

Most curtain track drive unit replacements happen on a track that is otherwise fine. The belt has been replaced once already, the housing has cracked at the screw bosses, or the socket has worn oval and the curtain hesitates at the start of travel.

The sequence is straightforward: release the belt tension, disconnect the belt at its connector, take out the base plate screws, and lift the housing off the end of the rail. The new housing goes on, the belt is fed back around the idler, the connector is rejoined and the tension is reset.

Two things make the job go wrong. Fitting the housing without checking that the belt sits in the idler groove rather than beside it, and setting tension before the belt has been run once around the full track. Both produce the same symptom — a track that works for a week and then starts skipping.

Questions buyers ask

Is this sold with the belt?

No. The curtain track belt is a separate line, because the two wear at different rates and are normally replaced at different times. Order both when building a track from parts; order only the worn one when repairing.

Can I fit a different motor to this housing?

Only if the shaft is the same square size. The socket is what transmits the drive, and a shaft that is even slightly under size will rattle in the socket and wear it oval. Send the motor model with the enquiry.

Does the base plate come separately?

Yes — the plate and the socket are one part and can be replaced without changing the housing. That is normally the cheaper repair when the socket is the only worn component.

How do I know the housing matches my track?

Send the track model, or the profile drawing if it is a track we do not make. A photo of the rail end with a ruler across the top is enough to confirm the width, and the slot underneath can be checked from the same photo.
