PVC Double Curtain Track – Twin Rail for Sheer and Drape

Two parallel PVC channels on a single ceiling fixing — sheer in front, drape behind, both sliding by hand. For hotel rooms and residential projects where one window has to do two jobs.

Demande de renseignements

A double curtain track carries two curtains instead of one: a sheer or voile on the rail nearest the glass, a lined drape on the rail behind it, both hanging from the same ceiling fixing. R&C supplies it as a twin PVC extrusion with matching end caps and ring runners, cut to the lengths your order needs.

This is the rail for the room that has to do two jobs with one window — let daylight in without putting the room on show in the afternoon, then black it out at night. Doing that with two separate tracks means two sets of fixings, two cutting lists and twice the chance of one of them being set at the wrong projection. A double curtain track does it with one line of fixings and one line on the quotation.

Two rails, one fitting — what double actually buys you

A double curtain track runs its two channels parallel on a single moulded body. The front channel takes the sheer, the back channel takes the drape, and the gap between them is what stops the two fabrics touching when both are drawn. That gap is the whole point: two curtains on the same plane rub, catch and wear, and no amount of careful hanging fixes it.

Because both channels sit on one section, the fixing line is shared. That halves the drilling on a concrete soffit, halves the anchors, and means the two curtains are always at the same height — which on a long hotel corridor is the difference between a run of windows that reads as one installation and a run that looks like it was done by three different crews.

The rail is hand operated. Runners are pushed along each channel independently, so the sheer and the drape open and close on their own. Nothing is powered, nothing is paired, nothing needs a handover briefing.

Where a double track earns the extra cost

A double costs more than a single and takes a wider fixing footprint, so it has to be justified. It is the right specification in:

  • Hotel guest rooms — sheer by day, blackout by night, one fixing line per window across every floor
  • Serviced apartments and short-let units — guests expect to control light without closing the room off
  • Residential developments and show flats — the double track is what makes a room photograph well and live well
  • Clinics and treatment rooms — a privacy sheer that stays drawn while a blackout drape is opened for examination light
  • Retail and hospitality frontage — a light sheer for the day and a solid drape for after hours, on one fixing line

Where the window only ever carries one curtain — a corridor sidelight, a store room, a stairwell — a single rail does the same job for less. That is what our PVC single curtain track is for, and it is the better quote in those rooms.

Sheer and drape on the same bracket — how the two rails work

The front channel is the one nearest the window, and it takes the lighter fabric. That is deliberate: a sheer is what gets opened and closed most during the day, and putting it on the front channel means it can be drawn without reaching past the drape.

Both channels take the same runner, which matters more than it sounds. One runner type across both rails means one spare part on the van, one line on the stock sheet, and no argument on site about which bag the small runners came out of. The ring hangs below the channel, the curtain hooks onto the ring, and the runner body travels inside the extrusion.

End caps close both channels at each end. On a double curtain track the caps are a single moulding that covers the front and back together, which is why they have to be ordered with the rail rather than sourced later — a twin cap is not two single caps pushed together.

PVC double track or aluminium double track

The choice is the same one buyers face on single rails, and the answer is the same: it is about duty, not quality.

If the drape on the back channel is interlined, or the room is a suite where the curtain is part of the design, the aluminium double system is the better specification — see the professional double track aluminium system. Where the drapes are standard hotel blackout and the budget is set per key, this PVC twin rail is the one that gets the job done at the price.

Runners and end caps on a twin rail

A double consumes runners faster than a single, simply because there are two channels to fill. On a standard window that means roughly twice the runner count of the single rail, and the count has to be worked out per channel rather than guessed for the rail as a whole.

Runners and caps are quoted as separate lines so the quantities follow the window schedule. A buyer who orders the rail and assumes the runners come with it ends up short halfway through a floor, and a short runner cannot be improvised on site.

Sliding is by hand in both channels, with no cord and no baton. Where a project needs a cord operation on the drape, that is a different rail and worth asking about before the order is placed rather than after.

Fixing to the ceiling

Every double curtain track ceiling fixing has to land on a solid line, because the body is wider than a single and the load sits further out from the fixing point. The section fixes flat against the ceiling on its top face rather than on a bracket arm, so the fixing goes straight through into the ceiling. On plasterboard that means finding the batten rather than the sheet edge; on a suspended ceiling the track needs to be fixed back to the grid or to a pattress, not to the tile.

What has to be established before cutting is the ceiling type: concrete soffit, plasterboard on battens, metal deck or suspended grid. Each takes a different anchor, and anchors are normally supplied by the fitter.

Send the ceiling type and the span and the fixing positions come back marked on the cutting list. That single step is what stops a twin rail arriving on site and being fixed at three points where it needed five.

Cutting, packing and order quantities

The double curtain track is cut to length before packing, so the length ordered is the length that arrives — both channels cut together, both caps matched to the same cut. For projects the usual pattern is one carton per window, labelled by room, which is what makes a full floor installable in a day.

Three ways to order depending on the job: cut lengths against a window schedule, full lengths for a distributor who cuts locally, and mixed cartons where several window sizes ship together.

Because a double curtain track is bulkier than a single, carton counts per container are lower than buyers expect if they are quoting from single-rail experience. Worth checking the loading plan before the order is confirmed rather than at the port.

What to send for a quotation

Four things make a quote accurate on the first pass:

  1. A window schedule — width and drop per opening, or the number of openings and the typical size
  2. The ceiling type
  3. Whether both channels carry curtains, or only one for now
  4. Whether the track ships as cut lengths or full lengths

With those, the rail, the runner count per channel and the packing list come back on one sheet.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between a double curtain track and two single tracks?

One fixing line instead of two, one cutting list instead of two, and a fixed gap between the two curtains that does not have to be set on site. Two singles can do the same job if the projection is generous and the installer is careful, but on volume work the twin rail removes the variable.

Can the two curtains be different lengths?

Yes. The two channels are independent, so a sheer to the sill and a drape to the floor is a normal specification on this rail. Nothing couples the two.

Is a double curtain track wide enough for a bay window?

The section is straight, so a bay needs either a separate length per face or a bend. Send the bay geometry and the right arrangement gets quoted — this is one of the cases where the answer depends on the drawing rather than the catalogue.

Do I need a double track if the room only has one curtain?

No. A single rail does the job for less money and takes a narrower fixing footprint. The double only pays for itself when there are genuinely two fabrics to hang.

Is this the same as a double curtain rail?

Yes — double curtain track, double track curtain rail and double curtain rail all describe the same product, and buyers use the three interchangeably in enquiries. What is not the same is a double curtain rod: that is a decorative pole system, not an extruded track.

Can the double track be motorised?

No. This is hand operated on both channels. If the project needs motorisation, the electric double tracks in this category are the right starting point.

This double curtain track sits in the curtain tracks and rails range. For a single curtain on the same fixing detail, see the PVC single curtain track. For heavy interlined drapes, the aluminium double track system carries more. Runners for both channels are in the curtain runner category, and the white plastic runner is the matching part.
